Yes, you’ll need a valid referral from a doctor or specialist for all Medicare-rebatable scans, including X-ray, ultrasound, CT, and DEXA. We accept referrals addressed to any provider, it’s your choice where you go.

Yes, if you’ve received a referral, you can book directly with us. You don’t need your doctor to book on your behalf.

Paitent Booking

No, most general X-rays are available on a walk-in basis. However, appointments are required for certain scans such as MRI, ultrasound, CT, Bone Densitometry, CBCT’s and low-dose CT for lung cancer screening. If you’re unsure, our team can advise you when you call.

We provide a full range of diagnostic imaging, including:

  • X-ray
  • Ultrasound (including obstetric and vascular)
  • CT (Computed Tomography)
  • Dental Imaging (OPG, Cephalometry, Cone Beam CT (CBCT) )
  • DEXA (Bone Densitometry)
  • ILO Chest X-rays for Occupational Lung Disease Screening

Some scans require preparation, such as fasting or a full bladder. Your doctor or our team will give you specific instructions when you book. Please contact us if you are unsure of any prep requirements for your upcoming appointment.

Most scans are quick and take between 15 -30 minutes, depending on the type of imaging. Our team will let you know what to expect when you book.

We bulk bill most services, including many X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds, especially for eligible Medicare card holders, pensioners and healthcare care holders. However, some scans may not be bulk billed depending on Medicare rules and the type of procedure. For accurate cost information please contact us and speak to our friendly team.

Your images are stored securely and sent directly to your referring doctor. Patients can also access their imaging reports through My Health Record or our secure Patient Portal. If you need help accessing your records, please contact our team.

Our radiologists aim to have cases reported within 48 hours and all urgent cases within 24. Reports are sent electronically to your referring doctor.

If you’re pregnant or think you might be, it’s important to tell our team before your scan. Some imaging (like ultrasound) is safe during pregnancy, while others (like X-ray) are avoided unless absolutely necessary.

Yes, even if your referral is addressed to another imaging provider, you can choose to have your scan at Gippsland Lakes Medical Imaging.

Yes, MRI will very soon be available at our Bairnsdale facility using the Siemens MAGNETOM Flow 1.5T scanner.
