Fast, Low-Dose
Bone Density Scan.

At Gippsland Lakes Medical Imaging, we offer Bone Mineral Density (BMD) testing using a GE Lunar
DEXA system. This unit uses advanced fan-beam technology to deliver clear, accurate results with
very low radiation exposure.

DEXA scans are the most reliable method for assessing bone density and are commonly used to
help diagnose or monitor osteoporosis and other bone health conditions.

What Is A Bone Density Scan?

A bone density scan, also called a DEXA or DXA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), is a medical test used to measure the strength and density of bones.

It works by using a very low dose of X-rays to determine how much calcium and other minerals are present in a section of bone, usually the hip or spine. The results help doctors assess a person’s risk of fractures and diagnose conditions such as osteoporosis or osteopenia. The procedure is quick, painless, and noninvasive, typically taking about 10–20 minutes, and by identifying bone loss early, a bone density scan helps guide treatment and lifestyle changes to protect bone health.
